Søren Nitte Niller
With the creation of Sören’s character, we aimed for a simpler and more straightforward style of textual expression and a comic-book-like visual language.
Since the texts for Sören’s work ‘Five Days, Seven Stories’ were co-written (the authors Priit Kukk and Erkki Trummal), one of the impulses for creating the character was the fact that Erkki was living in Denmark at the time and thus gained significant experience and input from the cultural and natural environment there. In addition to youthful audacity, Sören’s texts also carry a hint of a melancholy tone, stemming from Denmark’s relatively dark—and in some people’s opinion, depressing—winters, and a general closed-off nature when interacting with strangers, which is common in that society.
Under the name of Sören, we also did a cinematic experiment together with some talented young people. The filmmaking team consisted of director Meel Paliale and choreographers Valeria Januškevitš and Joonas Tagel.
The short film is titled ‘Freja – Seek Freedom, Find Love’. At first glance, its underlying motif might seem strange: comparing the movement of a woman’s body to the movement of a car, seeking a certain harmony within it and trying to capture the essential elements of moving together. With this film, we tried to approach Volkswagen dealerships in Estonia to show that moving with a car can at times be just as graceful as walking on foot, and that a car is like an accelerator for transitioning into different environments. A collaboration with Volkswagen remained out of reach at that time, but in our opinion, the short film is a quite lovely, timeless watch.
Released in 2024, ‘Levels’ is a very minimalist short form. It consists of five free-form texts that are like brief snapshots of life and situations. Reading it does not overburden the mind or the senses, yet it is charged with an abundant, youthful energy.
Illustrations
When creating the visuals, we searched for the right form of expression for a long time, and partly by chance, we came across the name of Maria Jose Gomez (Majito Gómez) from Chile.
Maria’s work caught our eye online, and since the style of her illustrations resonated with us, we decided to commission the visual concepts from her. We provided her with the English texts, as well as reference photos of the required environments and items characteristic of the Danish cultural space.
The smaller illustrations for the black-and-white e-book, as well as the layouts and collages for all of Niller’s physical printed materials, were designed by Krete Pajo.
As a whole, the Niller project thus became very international in nature, uniting the cultural perceptions of several countries and the visions and skills of different people.
